buying a 740 turbo[ALL/1998] posted by Greg Carpenter on

Greetings, all.
I'm considering purchasing a 1988 744 Turbo. It has been driven
summers only (a plus up here in Northern MI), has 77,000
original miles on it, and has never had the turbo serviced.
It runs well except for an erratic idle and occasional misfire
when the A/C is on. These symptoms disappeared when I
switched th A/C off. My major concern is the turbo... how long
do these things usually last? The owner is asking
$7000, and the body and interior are in excellent shape.
What major expenses can I expect in the next 50,000 miles?
Is this a good ballpark price? Are their any quirks specific
to this model that I should be aware of before putting down
cash?
Thanks,
Greg Carpenter

If the oil change history is good and remains good(5K miles max.) the
can last 250K miles. Water hoses likely need to be changed
soon. The radiator will need to be changed as that one is a composite (nice way of saying aluminum w/plastic tanks) and all cars with such radiators can have
failures when radiator reaches 6 or more years old. Other than those normal
maintenance items that car should be good for 100k more miles w/o major component replacement/overhaul.
