740 AC oil leak??[ALL/1998] posted by amish desai on

I just recently had to have my AC charged up because
it wasn't blowing cold air. Now, it works fine, but
the other day when I happened to open the hood, I
saw this gooey light brown residue all over the
AC canister (the cylindrical metal container with
the ac piping connected to it).

It was all over the piping. I took it to the shop and
the mechanic said that it is normal for some compressor
oil to leak out like that. Another Volvo mechanic told me
that on my 740, this is a problem because the black cap/nut
that sits on one of the pipes always leaks.

Is this true, or do i just need to re-tighten the fittings?

The same mechanic said that as long as it is blowing cold air
don't worry about it, and later I probably should the whole
system to a different refrigerant at that time he will change
the piping.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks in advance,

amish

Amish,
Your mechanics are wrong on all counts. The AC system should never leak - - anywhere. They should have tested the system for leaks and made any necessary repairs prior to recharging. In a short time you will need another recharging. Go back to where you had the work done and demand that the job be done right without additional charges, except for the repairs that should have been done in the first place.
Tell mechanic #2 that there is a (Schrader) fitting under that "leaking" black plastic cap that needs to be tightened or replaced.

Good luck,
Tom

The black cap he is referring to may be the factory quick fill instead of the schrader valve fitting on the side of the drier. It has a cap which cannot be removed. There is a pipe available from Volvo which replaces this short pipe from the evaporator to the drier. This will eliminate this common leak.
