Installing an overdrive transmission in one without?[ALL/1998] posted by Rob Krewson on

I've found a wrecked '82 240 with an overdrive tranny i'm contemplating buying and installing on my '77 264. I've got a couple questions concerning this:
1) I noticed that i've got an overdrive lamp built into my instrument cluster. There're also two unused sets of contacts on the rear of the cluster. I assume there's an additional wiring harness the overdrive equipped cars have? If this is the case, what do i need to look for? And is a later model harness compatable with the early style cluster? The 240 I'll be pulling this out of has a more modern instrument setup.
2) Is the mounting the same from a '77 6 to the '82 4? From what I understand, the only thing different about the 6 cyl models is the engine; that is, everything from the firewall back is identical to the 4 cyl models. Is this correct?
Thanx,
Rob
I should get an award... I just finished rebuilding a b27f this week! (and i never, EVER want to do that again!)

Rob -
Congratulations on completing your rebuild! I just got my rebuilt B21
on the road a couple of months ago - what a relief. I *think* that
you will not be able to put the 6 cyl. tranny on a 4 cyl. block.
Whether or not that is the case, you will definitely need all the
overdrive's wiring - right up to the back of the intrument cluster.
There is also a pigtail piece which bypasses the neutral start switch
wiring on the manual transmission models.

I'm pretty sure the bell housings are different (not too familiar with the V6s as I've avoided them for most of my life). Since the bell housings on the M45/46 are actually the front of the trans (unlike the M40/41) you can't easily switch them. Also, I do know that the input shafts changed around '79 from 10 spline to 22 spline, so you'll have to have the later clutch disk IF it'll even bolt up. ---Brian
