544 overdrive[ALL/1998] posted by schwig on

I have a 64 544, that is just back on the road after major alterations and repairs, It has a b18b engine out of my rusted 64 1800s and is purring beautifully. The next step is to install the overdrive, which looks like it might be a little tight due to the unibody tunnel etc. Hopefully, somebody out
there has already accomplished this feat, and can lead me on the the true path.
Thanks
rob

It's more than a little tight. You'll have to cut out the tunnel to fit and make a cover for the hole.
The driveshaft front section is 11 3/4" too long, too.

I put a '75 overdrive trans in my 122. I enjoyed having it, but overall I'd have to say it wasn't worth it. I had the thing apart to replace a broken spacer. I got it back together and it worked fine, but I couldn't get it to stop leaking oil. There are two paper-thin gaskets between the trans and OD unit. You have to twist that section to get the countershaft back in. I think you have to make a deal with Satan to get it back together without damaging either of the gaskets and not have it leak oil. After a few repair attempts I got fed up with it and put the 4-speed back in. Now I don't miss it. What I'm getting at is that I don't really think the OD transmissions are worth the hassle. Especially if you've got as many installation problems as with a 544. ---Brian
