A/C Problem in '98 V70[ALL/1998] posted by Mark Tempelmeyer on

I have a new V70 with a problem with the A/C. When operated for several hours at a time (such as on an interstate driving constantly) the dampers close down and no air is passed into the car. If the system is shut down for about 15 minutes, it works properly again.
The dealer tells me that this is a known problem with 70 Series cars, and Volvo has put out a couple of fixes that haven't worked, and are working on a design to the A/C controller.
I'm looking for more information on this problem ... is the dealer giving me the correct story? Is the problem likely to deteriorate such that my A/C will not work during city driving? Is this problem common to all 70s, or unique to a few vehicles? Is this problem common to 850s?
Thanks to anyone that can help.

We have not run into this problem. There was/is a problem on some S/V70 control panels but Volvo has delivered updated parts. This was not for the symptoms you describe.
I tend to believe they are having trouble duplicating the problem and therefore, can't troubleshoot it properly. BUT, this is an assumption on my part.
I attended a Volvo master tech meeting (one tech from each dealer) concerning known new problems and their fixes and no other techs asked about the problem you describe and Volvo didn't mention any a/c problems on the new cars

Mark,
I am an owner of a 98 S70 GLT. What kind of problems did you find at the session? Are there any that should be check out or corrected soon??
Thanks,
Stu

Really not much for the S/V70. We discussed some things about 850s and 960s.
There was a representative from the "information" department there. She wanted some input as to what we liked and didn't like concerning technical info and the fashion it is distributed. We spent a LOT of time with this.
None of the problems were new to anyone. They showed what actions they have been taking to rectify some known occurances.

Have just heard about a problem similar to the one you describe. Apparently, there is some type of electrical feedback being generated and rendering the a/c controls useless at times. This is truly a "wacky" one! Volvo is hot on the case and should have something in the works right about now. I've heard something about a diode which may fix this. Keep a close relationship with your local service manager and make sure he calls when Volvo has any good ideas.
I wish I had better news, especially when your a/c is acting up!
