Driver Power Seat Cable?[ALL/1998] posted by Bruce on

The Seat-back on my '95 854T does not operate. I can hear the motor turning but it is stuck in the last position left by another driver and will not move. I was told by the dealer that the cable has come undone and just needs to be reattached (this, of course happened just 400 miles out of warranty, otherwise I would take it to the dealer). I have looked under the seat but do not see anything that resembles a cable.

Does anyone know how to access the cable or, if that is even the problem? It is just the seatback recliner that does not operate, forward, backward, tilt up/down front and rear all work fine (leather interior). Can someone help? Thanks for you time!

I had one about two weeks ago doing the exact same thing. The cable is inside the seat back. What has happened is the inner cable has shifted to one end. The cheapest/easiest way to repair this is as follows.

Remove seat from car. At the bottom of the seat back, there are three or four metal rings which hold the upholstery in place cut or bend these so you can pull the cover up. You won't have to remove the entire cover, but you will need to peel it up some. DON'T pull hard. There are "hog rings" (this is what they are actually called- Volvo has them in stock) inside the seat holding the pleats. Cut/bend these also. the cable should be in plain view by now. Disconnect the cable from the motor end. There should be one or two 7 or 8mm head bolts holding the plate to the end of the motor which holds the cable into the end of the motor. Remove this plate and the cable will pull right out.

Remove the inner cable (it'll pull right out). Pull the metal sleeve off the end of the outer housing. Cut the black plastic outer housing about 1/4" shorter. Take a cigarette lighter and heat up the metal sleeve up and push it back on the outer housing. Let cool and reinstall the inner cable. Reinstall the cable in the motor. Car
