745Ti Wheels[ALL/1998] posted by Ed Mills on

Just found out 2 of wheels on my 88 740 Turbo Wagon are bent. Actually the other 2 are less than perfect also when spun. Wheel repair place locally was not thrilled at seeing 5 spoke 15" Volvo wheels, or maybe they were ($$$). Anyway, estimate is $650 to repair / recondition 4 wheels. So 3 questions:
1. Anyone out there with a set of good used 15" or preferably 16" original Volvo wheels that will fit an 88 740 Turbo Wagon?
2. What is realistic limit on size (wheels & tires) for this application? It looks like I don't have a lot of inboard clearance - maybe 3/4 inch static at tire shoulder at each side at steering locks on 195/60-15 which is almost worn out. Probably 3/4 inch on wheel inner bead to strut in front and hoses in back. It looks fairly limiting, but I have heard 225/50-16 on 7.5" wheel will work. Seems incredible???
3. What experience with aftermarket wheels for this car? What is available out there and what offsets, widths, etc.?
Thanks for any help.

Ed,
It seems you have got four choices to your wheel problem. 1.) the more
expensive solution purchase 4 new wheels from your Volvo dealers at @$500.00
for each. 2.) get all 4 wheels re-condition at @$650.00 or try another place
that reconditions them for a cheaper price. Try Wheel Collision Center
1-800-292-Rims (7467). They also have a web site don't remember it off hand right now! 3.) Try find someone who has a couple of those 5 spoke 15" 700
series turbo alloy Volvo wheels! or the last choice 4.) find yourself a set of 4 aftermarket alloy wheels that will fit your Volvo. I only know of a few
aftermarket manufactures of alloy wheels that will fit Volvos. TSW U.S.A.
has a pretty good selection they also have a web site at the following:
www.tswnet.com
On the TSW web site it only listed the "Concept" style that will fit the 700
series but, that's not true! The Stealth, EVO and Blade will also fit.
IPD U.S.A. carries them but, the shipping fee will kill you! Suggest you find a local dealer who carries TSW. I got my set of 15" TSW Stealth for @550.00
U.S. $$ (4 of them).
Good luck in which ever route you plan to take!
By the way, the cheapest set of 4 alloy wheels I got for my Volvos was from
Tirerack for @421.00 U.S. $$ (4 of them) were called OZ Pluton or MSW type 31 (one and the same).

Thanks for inputs - now what is realistic under a stock height uncut 1988 740 Wagon? Are there any differences that make the 88 unique - it had 195/60-15 while later (90?) wagons had 205/55-16 which are same height as 205/60-15?
By the way, I tried a 225/50-15 Eagle GS-C (full tread) on stock 6x15x25mm and got rub on radius rods in front at full lock (that I can live with). Also got rub on chassis at inboard top of tire in rear with no load but under heavy cornering. That bothers me a little since it was with no load. Not anxious to run spacers or to cut wheel lips - done that on a 240Z.
Anyone know if 20mm offset will work - info indicates earlier 5 spokes with uncovered lug nuts were 6x15x20mm. Extra 5mm (0.2 in) might make the difference if no outboard problems??
Are 7.5x16 practical, if so, what is maximum offset? Assuming 225/50-16 tires.
