Rear caliper won't grip after brake job on '80 240 GT[ALL/1998] posted by Trish on

I've bled the brakes 'til I'm blue in the face. My friend and I replaced all 4 rotors, pads and metal brake lines with good OEM parts and no matter how much we bleed, there is still air in the system. We went through the Haynes manual's bloody bleeding sequence, removed all the air (or so we thought), and the pedal's still spongy. So we go through the procedure all over, and more air bubbles come out. (Personally, I think it's because he's reusing the fluid to top off the resevoir while bleeding, getting air back into the system) More importantly, the driver's side rear caliper isn't gripping any more (since we started the job). The only brake line we didn't have to replace was the driver's rear, but I don't think that's why the caliper isn't gripping anymore. Could it be the valve? Somebody please help!!

Trish, Just a thought on this. I have had old master cylinders go bad when bleeding brakes. If there is rust in the bore of the master and you push the pedal to the floor when bleeding, it could damage the seal(s). I would certainly suspect the master if your lines aren't leaking.---Brian

Trish, Brian T. is correct. It probably is the master cylinder. I got a great price at Trollhatten ($60) and it was a 20 min installation. You will have to rebleed after installation but please, please, please do not ever reuse brake fluid, even if its clean, spanking, new! One trip thru the system can pick up all sorts of stuff,( water, metal filings, etc.) and reusing it is just feeding the fire. Also check the rubber hoses that go to the calipers, they sometimes will be permeable to brake fluid after a few years. I had a problem "slow leak" that never caled for bleeding but would consume a least half the res. over a 3 month period. Both rear caliper hoses were "weeping" fluid under pressure. Couldn't see it til I put it up on a rack and had someone pump the peadl hard, then it apeared like morning dew.

Try the master cylinder as a partial seal failure in the cylinder bore could cause the problem.

Wait a minute...You were supposed to be the walrus, I was supposed to be the master cylinder!
