Well, what does the body shop say? Any good body shop can get the parts you need./ Or are you tackling this yourself? If so, you can get the body panels you need through a Volvo dealer, along with the various trim pieces you will need also. I assume you aren't insured or you wouldn't have waited since October. Or maybe you are insured? Anyway, give us some more info. And please turn off the caps lock when you post - you'll get better results. Thanks

Josh

I never considered using a Volvo as a meat tenderizer...

Well Josh, one body shop quoted me $3,000 to fix the damage and another body shop did not respond after viewing the damage. I did not have comprehensive insurance which would have covered my accident--if I would have been insured, they would have probably damaged-out the car. Anyway, I have this car and I need to do something with it and where I am located there aren't many foreign cars or specifically Volvo's not to mention people who will or can work on them.I would like to locate parts for the car--this is my first attempt--and maybe some advice about getting it fixed. I am not the most knowledgeable about cars and people like to take advantage of unknowledgeable people--this is why I posted the note. Sorry about the caps--I did not realize it was that big a deal. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Christina, one suggestion I have, whether you're going to do it yourself or not, is to price the body panels from a Volvo dealer. If you're not a member of the VCOA (Volvo Club of America) you might consider joining because that gets you a 20% discount on parts- well worth the $25 annual membership fee. Join by sending $25 to VCOA, P.O Box 16 Afton NY 13730. I don't have any affiliation, other than I'm a happy member.

As for dealers - I don't know of any in your part of Michigan (or any other part actually) and it's better to have the panels shipped from a closer dealer - on the other hand they may be shipped from Volvo in NJ so perhaps it doesn't matter. But two good dealers are Village Volvo in MD (800 501-0403) and Borton Volvo in MN (800 328-7114). The parts guys at both shops are super.

If you don't get help on this board about fixing the car, there are a couple of other email lists to consult. The VCOA has one where there are plenty of helpful people. email me for that info (josh@vmr.com).

Also - don't worry about the CAPS thing. It's a big deal for some people who might not respond to questions posed in caps, or who might just flame you without being helpful.

Good luck!

Josh

Christina, Call around to major auto salage yards in Mich. and ask if they have a front clip or nose from an 85-740GLE. That will save you a lot of hassle and also allow you to see the uncrushed structure during disassemmbly so reassembly is easier. It will be painted, maybe not the right color, and will probably have a lot of extra stuff that will add up if bought new.

It's the cheapest way to get the beast rolling again! Most large yards will deliver to the shop of your choice.

Have you considered asking the local High School Auto Shop class to take it on as a project? Cheap labor!

Christina,

You stated that you wanted to locate parts for the car. Since the car is an 85' 740. Were you considering new parts or good used parts? You know you can find good used parts from salvage yards around the U.S. Please find enclosed a listing of them below. By the way they all have 1-800 telephone numbers. This saves on long distance charges.

JOHN'S Import Auto Wrecking:

Portland, Or. 1-800-446-7678.

Hirsh Industries (Volvo only salvage)

Phoneix, AZ. 1-800-28-VOLVO or

1-520-574-1717.

Standbergs Auto.

Centuria,Wi. 1-800-448-5121.

Explain to them what you are looking for. Then phone your nearest Volvo dealer to see how much is the same parts needed new. Then choose between used and new!
