Upgrading Amazon 6-volt to 12-volt[ALL/1998] posted by Mark Levermore on

I have a 1961 Amazon 122s B16B which runs on 6- volts electrics. How do I go about upgrading it to 12 volts?
Is it a matter of putting a 12v battery in one end and changing the bulbs at the other end?
What would I have to change?
I suspect the starter motor may be a problem, also the voltage converter from the engine out to the battery?
What do I do?
Could you list all the components I'd need to change?
Thanks
Mark

Mark, The starter may not even need to be changed. I had a 6v 544 and jumped it many times with a 12v battery and never had a problem with it. (That sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it? At any rate, the starter turned fine with a 12v battery.) Don't forget about the ignition coil, wiper motor and heater fan. I suspect they'd all fry fairly quickly under a 12v system. And you need a 12v generator and voltage regulator to recharge the battery. One good thing is that the 6v wiring should be beefier since it is required to carry more amperage. Good luck.---Brian
