Wheels/tires for 1970 1800E?[ALL/1998] posted by Chita on

I'm putting my old 1800E back on the road. A major question has arisen with regard to tires. It's been up on blocks a long time, so I must replace all four. However, the original wheels are presenting a bit of a problem with regard to size. My local Costco doesn't offer the top Michelin in 185-65 15. When people come in asking for this, they typically move them up to the 205. 185 is already stretching it for this car. I think the native size is 175.

The original wheels are that black mag with the chrome trim ring. I can't say I'd fight to keep them, but I also am not sure what else is available or desirable. Would changing wheels give any benefits besides better options in tires?

Any hints, tips, war stories gratefully accepted.

You can still get the 185R15 Michelins. Are you ready to pay big? There is a company which still manufactures them under license from Michelin in Tennessee. Can't remember their name, exactly. Check with some of your local tire stores and mention about this specialty tire manufacturer. Someone's bound to know the name. Last time I checked on 185s from 'em, the cost was about $100 per. I didn't buy. Godd luck. Gilbert Kirk

Chita- Have you looked in Hemmings? I've got to believe that those tires are available for less than the price Gilbert quoted. Let me know how it turns out. Regards, Jim

Tires and more for 1800E[ALL/1998] posted by Chita on

I ended up buying Michelin MX-1 tires. It cost a bit, but there turned out to be a number of tires available in 185-65-15, from $50 to over $100. I ended up with the Michelins because they offered the best combination of warranty (6 years, unlimited mileage) and local service. I'm a bit distressed that Michelins have moved away from offering mileage warranties, but I've had good experience with the brand so I went for it.

I wouldn't mind changing wheels, but at the moment, I'm more concerned with getting a new air conditioner and guages. I REALLY don't want to replace those Smiths with more Smiths - they were pretty bad to start with.

Any pointers to instrument vendors for a 1970 1800E would be appreciated.
