544 gas tank filling and capacity.[ALL/1998] posted by Harley Johansen on

I have a '61 544 with a newly installed cleaned and painted gas tank. Two problems with this are: 1. It runs out of gas after about 4 gallons are consumed from full tank.
2. It take forever to fill the tank.
Has anyone had similar problems with the 544 tank? HJ

Harley, Sounds like you have a venting problem with the tank. Check if the tank vent was connected properly or was plugged dirung the recent installation. The theory is like filling a 1 gal bottle up and the turning it upside down to drain, the liquid inside can't come out until the air gets inside at an equal or better rate. Thats why the tank won't supply fuel even with a pump. The pressure inside is less than outside so it starves the engine. The same for refill, if the air can't get out the gas cannot flow in at a decent rate, see if air comes out of fill tube when you pump gas into tank if it does then the vent is clogged or not connected correctly, also check gas cap vent. Thanks to person who responded to my questions. I checked the vent tube. It was closed with a plug on the filler part, and the vent pipe from the tank was just sitting there open-ended. It may have been plugged too. I put a hose on it and blew until gas came back up, then connected it to the filler pipe vent. I now have another question.
When I take gas cap off, I can see the open end of the vent tube inside the filler pipe and down about 6 inches from the lip. Is that normal? It seems that gas will just run into the vent when filling. Is that a problem? Thanks, Harley Johansen.
