1984 GLT Blue Exhaust when cold[ALL/1998] posted by Rick Wilburn on

I have a 1984 244 GLT. When first started in the morning it burns a lot of oil. As soon as the engine warms up the blue smoke disappears. Is this a sign of the turbo going out. I haven't been driving the car for about 3-4 months because I was lettimg my wife use it. Now that I have it back I don't remember having this amount of oil being burned.

Sounds like one of the classic symptoms of worn or damaged valve guides. (It may be the turbo, if it's sprung an oil leak into the exhaust.) Most likely, oil is probably getting past one or more of the valve guides, getting burned unnoticed as the engine runs. When you shut down, the oil drips down the valve stem, accumulates in the cylinder (or port, if the valve is closed), to be burned en masse upon startup.
Now that I think about it (which could be *really* dangerous!), if the blue cloud occurs immediately upon starting, it's probably the valve guides. If it takes a few seconds or longer, it may be a turbo leak, as the manifold would take some time to get hot enough to burn the oil.
Good Luck, Gary
