Change the timing belt?[ALL/1998] posted by Dana on

I thought I saw a message about the need to change the timing belt every 60K miles. I bought an '86 240DL wagon last year with 140K miles and can't find service records in it indicating it was ever changed. I have to take the car in to have a pesky OD malfunction looked at, should I have them change this belt at the same time? Am I driving an engine-failure-time-bomb, so to speak?
Thanks again, Dana

Dana, If your mechanic can check the front cover seal and tell if it'd relatively new, then chances are the belt was chnged at 120K. But my gut feeling is better safe than sorry. How's the water pump looking? If it needs replacement then the labor for the belt job is covered as the same stuff has to come off to access the timing belt.

The timing belt intraval on that model is actually 50K.If it breaks it's not the end of the world, but you will have to be towed, and might not have the liberty of choosing your mechanic to do the job.Have your mechanic take a look at the belt, if it's not cracked yet, then go to 150K and get back on scheudle.
