760 TD starter not turning[ALL/1998] posted by David G. Cole on

Fellow Bricksters,

What started out as a seemingly very simple problem on my '84 760 TD has now got me rather %#$%$#%#$! Here are the symptoms as I see them through my blood shot eyes:

1. Starter always works fine when cold

2. Starter always works fine after it has set for ~60 minutes or longer from hot

3. Once car has warmed up and then shut down for ~5-10 minutes will not turn over until cool

4. Turning key to "start" will cause a loud click from starter - hence solinoid seems to be working

5. Both positive and negative battery cables will get warm while attempting to turn engine over

6. Moving the trans selector from park or nuetral into a gear will cause the solinoid to NOT click

What I have done:

1. Had battery checked out. Not the problem.

2. Seemed a pretty simple problem now, bad starter. Replaced starter & solinoid. Not the problem.

3. Ok, maybe it is getting correct voltage but not sufficient current, replace both battery cables. Not the problem.

Now, the wiring diagram seems to indicate 2 additional relays in the starter system, plus somewhere a battery temp sensor. As the solinoid seems to engage I am ruling out the key switch itself, and the transmission selector "safety" overrider. Where are these 2 additional relays located? The temp sensor?

Ok Mr./Ms. Wizard(s), before I become a devoute monk and cast off all worldly possesions for the Simplier Life, what seems to be my next step?

very much appreciated

David, Run a jumper wire from the positive battery post to the 50 terminal of the starter next time it wont start. Be sure the car is in park and watch your hands as this should makethe engine crank over. If it does, try this. Get a 4 or 5 pole relay, such as a Volvo fog light relay. Here is a Volvo part number for a relay that will work if it is still a good number, PN 1324492-6.

Find a place to mount the relay, probably around the left shock tower. Run a wire from relay terminal 30 to the positive battery terminal (use an eyelet to connect to battery). Run a wire from relay terminal 87 to the 50 terminal on the starter (this is the small wire connected to the started solenoid coming from the ign. switch). Connect the original wire that connected to starter terminal 50 to the relay terminal 85. Finally run a wire from relay terminal 86 to a good ground point near the relay.

The reason your car wont start is most likely due to voltage drop in the 50 circuit between the ign switch and the starter. This set up will still allow the neutral safety switch and other functions to work a designed but the original circuit only has to close this new relay. The new relay will then send enough voltage to the starter solenoid to engage the starter. Robert

Robert,

This was, ironically, my next step. I was planning on putting a dual spade connector onto the solinoid, hooking up the regular ignition wire to one spade, and hooking a second wire onto the 2nd spade. Then second wire would run up (but not be connected yet) to the battery. The next time my starting problem occurs I could tag the second wire to the battery and see if the starter turned over. My thoughts were A) that if it did, then my problem was for a fact(?!?) in the wiring from the key switch to the solinoid, and B) it would keep my hands from getting 2nd degree burns from snaking my hands around the turbo and exhaust manifold.

Thanks for the post on how to hook up a relay to the system though, as this might be how I permanantly resolve the problem. Very much appreciated.

take care, david cole houston, tx '84 760 TD w/ 153k miles, aka: "Blue Smokey Beast"
