Correct Location for Driving Lights?[ALL/1998] posted by Stoney on

Is there a correct location and spacing for Driving Lights/Fog Lights? Yea, I know underneath the bumper on the front end of the car not the back end!

But seriously is there an accepted standard, Volvo or other, as to the location,IE: under headlights or on either side of plate in center? Or does it make a difference?

Also do those new blue driving lights really make a difference or is it just a testosterone indicator?

Driving lights (long-range, used with high beams, NOT to be used with oncoming traffic) should be mounted at or near headlight level. This minimizes "double shadows" on the road from them and the high beams coming from different heights. Optionally, they can be mounted below the bumper, but they may cause distracting shadows. YMMV.

Fog lights (short-range, wide beam, used with low beams only when foggy please!), should not be confused with driving lights. They should be mounted as low as practicable, below the bumper, to get under the fog and illuminate the road without reflecting back into your own eyes.

With both types, proper aim is essential, both for effectiveness, and in the case of fog lights, so as not to cause glare to oncoming drivers. Both types will also come with mounting and aiming instructions. Distance from center for either type is not functionally important.

While I'm ranting about fog light abuse, some people seem not to be aware that *rear* fogs used on clear nights are VERY distracting and hazardous to following drivers. They may also be hazardous to *you* if said following driver becomes annoyed enough to do something about it.

Haven't tried the blue type.

I hope this helps... Aloha, Gary
