I am presently looking at a 1980 bertone to replace my totalled '81 242. This is the same car that was pictured in the back of the latest ipd catalog. The previous owner obiously loved this car. He replaced the 6 cyl and automatic trans with a freshly rebuilt B21 and a 4 sp w/od. The interior is almost perfect, but the clear coat has oxidized badly especially on the hood. The car has been lowered and the stock wheels replaced with 15" 5 spoke. The blue book lists this rig at a high of about $2800. The owner is asking $4000 or best. Is this a case of emtional attachment effecting perceived value or is there something about this particular model that makes it worth more? Also , he indicates that the fuel pump blows a fuse every six months. Why would this be?

Matt, Considering a good paint job is $1000 and the fuel pump has a surge problem. Is it the original 6 cylinder fuel pump or a correct B21 pump? There might be a problem with voltage draw.

I think the owner is trying to pay for the B21 thru soaking you. The Beritone is a nice car but 1/2 of it was the engine system and now that is gone. Since you have a non standard car and parts are tough on Bertones, come up to say, $3200 and hold. If he balks take a walk and find another puppy. REMEMBER IT'S ONLY A CAR!!!

Hope you and spouse are well after the recent accident. Did you hold a wake for your 244? It served you well and gave its life for yours.

Matt, take your $3,000 and buy the newest 240 you can find. The Bertones never were very good models.Any parts that are specific to the Bertone ie.interior&body/trim parts, are being discontinued by Volvo. This reflects Volvo's enthusiam in the car.

May I pass a bit of advice to Matt? Regular electrical problems can frequently be a symptom of a badly repaired wreck. Sometimes cars that have a weird 'cut out' in any of the electrical systems have been hit and wiring poorly repaired (i.e. a piece of electrical tape) which wears then shorts on the body. If you haven't looked in the Volvo Club of America magazine you might want to. Bertones and 780's regularly show up. Good luck.
