Ack! '86 240DL OD problem rears ugly head[ALL/1998] posted by Dana on

A mechanic has told me on the phone that 98/100 times, my problem is the wiring & not the solenoid or OD unit. The OD indicator says it's in overdrive, but the car is obviously not in OD. I've decided to give this wiring thing a shot. I looked at the connection at the shifter knob (seems okay,) and down at the base (doesn't seem worn.) Then I took out the glove box and the lower console and was lost in a wiry jungle until I could follow the barking of my dog back out to safety (thank you Lassie.) I've also changed the fuse without threat to life & limb. Where do I from here? How can I make sure I'm following the right wires? I'd appreciate any further advice, even if it's: "give up you silly fumble-fingers."

Dana, According to my shop manual the color code for the Standard Manual Transmission OD relay is 2 Yellows #87(1 to OD lite 1 to OD Solenoid in Trans., 1 Red #85 to Trans switch, 1 Black # 31 to Ground, 1-Black/Brown #86 from Shifter switch,2 Blues # 15 1 to Shifter switch and 1 from Fuse #11 +12 in.

The color code for the AW70/71 3 speed OD Atomatic transmission is 1 White # 87a to OD lite, 1-White #87 to Solenoid, 1 Gray #86 from Shifter Switch,1 Black #31 to Ground, 2 Blues #15 1 to Shifter Switch and 1 from Fuse #9 +12 Volts in,

OD Relay Ground point is on face frame of console at top right corner. There is a connector under carpet on right side of trans tunnel grey/grey/white, the white wire goes to the Transmission Solenoid and has a connector below radio box at bottom of console. This is a place to check. Did you check that switch in shifter works? With voltmeter/continuity checker? (Please excuse me if I have insulted you, but the basics never hurt).

The solenoid switch is behind the shift linkage on the left side of the Transmission if you feel like doing it yourself. I assume that the relay is ney so that's the last thing you can do before pulling the Transmission.

Good Luck,

Stoney

Thanks for your help. I checked the button & the wiring myself. Everything seemed okay. I had some bozos check the transmission fluid when they changed the oil & they said it was full. I then took it to a foreign car mechanic & he replaced the relay, which seemed to fix it... for about 20 miles. When I took it back to him, he cleaned the solenoid & OD unit at no further charge (yay!) I've driven it for a couple of days & it seems fine, although it still doesn't like to drop into OD when the car's cold. I'm thinking that the button on the shifter is funky, since sometimes if you wiggle the shifter it goes right into OD. I'm beginning to wonder if my search for perfect functioning of the elusive OD is a pipe dream.
